Water containing calcium carbonate

Calcium carbonate occurs in dissolved form in virtually all types of water. Depending on region and origin of the water, there is very soft water with virtually no calcium carbonate through to very hard water with hardness values up to over 100 °dH. This calcium carbonate is precipitated, dependent on hardness and temperature, and is deposited in pipes, machines and on surfaces. Over the course of time, such deposits may build up more and more, thus leading to pipe blockages, machine malfunctions and thick scale encrustations which greatly impair heat transfer for instance.

Under normal conditions Merus is able to substantially prolong the intervals at which the coffee machine needs to be descaled. In the case of large industrial machines, it is frequently also the case that loose scale sludge collects at the bottom of the machine, and this can be removed simply during normal cleaning. Some customers have also reported that it has been possible to reduce coffee powder consumption by up to 15 %, depending on water quality.
